There are currently around 2,000 Somali pirates actively engaged in stealing, kidnapping, extorting, enslaving, imprisoning, torturing, terrorizing, and killing innocent sailors. Piracy in the Indian Ocean currently generates over $238 million annually for the pirates, and costs the public around $12 billion annually.
The largest ransom paid for a single ship is now $13.5 million, and increasing daily. Insurance companies are making fortunes, as well as “private security” firms. Shipping costs are skyrocketing. Currently, around 700 hostages are being held under appalling conditions in Somali waters, some for longer than a year. Countless Third World sailors have been killed and/or enslaved. With each passing day—and each mega-ransom paid—Somali pirates grow bolder, more violent, and move further afield. Occasionally these pirates attack small yachts as well as large ships. This book chronicles each of these terrifying “pleasure boat” attacks on the Lynn Rival, Tanit, Rockall, Quest, and more. It shines a light on who the pirates are, how they operate, and how they came to be.
It also takes an in-depth look at how and why the four American hostages aboard the Quest were executed in cold blood.
Somali Pirates and Cruising Sailors eBook Cap'n Fatty Goodlander
This book terrified me with all the information that we did not have when we made the decision to cross the Indian Ocean and Red Sea in 2011. Had we known this we would have done a lot more drinking!!! Actually, we would have headed another direction, probably to the Pacific.I thought this book was professionally well researched and made many valid points in an especially entertaining way. Fatty's style has a personality of it's own!! I wrote Fatty and told him that reading his book was a cathartic experience for me concerning grieving our fine mutual friends, the Adams, who we still miss.
I felt that his putting a personal edge to his anger expressed in his writing about the irrationality of the whole issue made it feel like almost a well voiced and personal conversation. If more folks could read this and experience the outrageous unjustness maybe we could motivate governments to do something more quickly. His anger speaks for that of cruisers everywhere.
I am especially appreciative that Fatty included my article written at the close of our voyage on CYAN, alone, during this season. I just want more folks to know about this invasion of the sanctity of our free oceans.

Somali Pirates and Cruising Sailors eBook Cap'n Fatty Goodlander Reviews
Having read several of Capt. Fatty's heart-pumping articles on this subject, I am eager to devour this book. We should all know more about these pirates. Not just the newspaper headlines, but the cost, the emotional strain on those captured and what it means to live in a world where the oceans are no longer a safe refuge from the political struggles on land. Piracy is a subject close to Gary Goodlander's heart. He has often been referred to as one himself, a daring swashbuckling character who lives according t his own rules, so it seems only natural after all the horrendous hijackings, he has picked up his pen to strip the term pirates of any romantic connotations it may have held. This is barbarism, this greed driven by desperation and a lust for easy pickings. the fact that the "pickings" are fellow boat people makes Fatty's writing even more pertinent. This is bound to be one his best books. I can't wait to read it.
This is a great book for those people contemplating transiting the gulf of Aden and other areas where pirates operate. Goes into the whys and the reasoning behind the pirate activities very interesting.
Many good stories..Would like to have heard additional viewpoints on same story.
I have read pretty much all of Fatty's cruising books and have enjoyed them all very much. For some reason this book is not written in the same style as the other books.. it starts out great but then goes putter putter... Fatty actually explains that this book actually started as an article for a magazine and ended up as a book. I do not think he had enough to actually fill a book so he just added letters and glossary... I think Fatty needs to slow down and take a little more time the way he did with his other books...
keep on sailing and writing Fatty!
I recommend this book for anyone, sailor and non-sailor alike. Captain Goodlander tackled an important topic and explains the history of piracy, how Somalia became ground zero for this hideous crime, and why it is necessary for cargo ships and cruisers to travel their waters. Although a serious book, Goodlander's creative and engaging style make it both interesting and entertaining to read. It also helps the reader make more sense of the current news events.
The book ends with the Captain's practical suggestions for how the world should deal with this problem. It is a call to action. We learn that unless the world's nations commit to ending this siege of the sea, it will only get worse. If you are a sailor interested in traversing these waters he also includes articles about how to organize a convoy and thoughts about shipping your vessel through this area versus taking the risk of sailing.
I could not put it down. Cap'n Fatty is great. This is a bit different from his humorous books. A gripping compilation of actual accounts of victims of pirates. A great read for any cruiser. It made me rethink my pirate defense strategy.
Great read from a guy who's been there!
